To gain a better understanding of how long the effects of Kratom can last for, it is best that we first educate ourselves as to how it is that Kratom extracts works to provide these effects at all.

With Kratom is one main ingredient known as Mitragynine which, to anyone more scientifically minded, is a type of alkaloid. It works by stimulating the brain of the user in much the same way as any other opioid would.
Kratom is best used for reducing, if not eradicating, pain from within our bodies. It does so by altering the mood levels within the brain, thus decreasing low feelings and alternatively promoting positive feelings instead. Here, Kratom’s effects are comparable to that of heroin or opium, which is why when Kratom strains are advertised in the US, it is referred to as a “legal psychoactive substance.”
For people who have used Kratom over a prolonged period of time, there may be withdrawal symptoms that they have to contend with in order to effectively stop using the natural drug. This is just the same as any other drug really and is usually a good sign that Kratom is being effectively expelled from the withdrawer’s body.
Kratom In Your Body
If you are thinking of using Kratom as an alternative natural pain medication, you should know the length of time that it is beneficial to your body and how long its effects last. To formulate this, the elimination half-life must be understood.
Kratom’s Elimination Half-Life
It may seem like a long title and complicated concept, but actually, it is much easier to understand than many people think, though it is not something very well known about.
2015 holds the most recent study result for us to see what Kratom’s elimination half-life is which works out at approximately 23.24 (±16.07 hours). This is, however, limiting to us when researching into the half-life because the study was undertaken four years ago, the study was small, only 10 participants were used, only males were included, and the results only showed what happened in men taking Kratom for up to 2 years, no longer.
Due to these findings and restricting factors, scientists have estimated that 50% of Kratom will be removed from the body in 24 hours. The scientists also predicted that the removal of all traces of Kratom from the human body would take approximately 5.33 days.
What else did the most recent study find out? Well, out of the 10 participants, the lowest half-life of Kratom was 7.17 hours which was estimated to be removed entirely from the body in 1.64 days, and the highest half-life in the study was 39.31 hours which would take 9 days to be fully expelled from the participants’ body.
From the results of this study, it can be seen that the more Kratom is used in frequency and volume, the slower the half-life, and vice versa.
Half-Life Influencing Factors
As with most substances, medical or recreational, there are multiple different factors that determine the length of time the effects remain within your body, and in this case, it is the Mitragynine from the Kratom. These factors can include:
The older you are when using any strain of Kratom, the longer it will remain in your system. This is more noticeably the case in people over the age of 65.
There are certain genetic markers and enzymes with a human body that alter the speed at which Kratom is removed naturally from the body. This is not something we are in control of.
Everyone has a certain degree of body, no matter how slim they appear on the outside. Mitragynine is highly fat soluble, which means that the more body fat you are in possession of, the longer the effects and traces of Kratom will remain in your body. People who have much less body fat will not retain Kratom as well, or for as long because they do not have the volume of fat it requires to be stored.
To absorb Mitragynine at higher speed, it is advised to eat it with a fatty meal, as this will also increase the rate at which it reaches its optimum level of concentration.
Also, if you are dehydrated, the amount of time for the Kratom to leave the body is significantly reduced.
Variable Kratom Factors
There are many other things which could alter the half-life of Kratom. The following apply to any substance:
- pH levels within the urine
- renal function
- metabolic rate.
The following apply solely to Kratom:
- Type of Kratom consumed
- Variety of Kratom plant which the leaves are harvested from
- Kratom harvested in SE Asia usually has higher levels of Mitragynine within it
- Sometimes if Kratom has been grown in areas not including SE Asia or in a greenhouse, there aren’t even traces of Mitragynine within it.
A Common Misconception
It is often thought that the Kratom leaves with the increased amounts of Mitragynine within them must be more effective at reducing pain, calming, and inducing sleep. However, this is not the case. This is shown in Kratom leaves where the Mitragynine levels are very low, but the levels of alkaloids within them are very high. This type of Kratom is just as effective at its job, it just will not be detected on any sort of drug screening.
Screening for Kratom
Urine – The fastest and most accurate way for anyone to test for Kratom, though false results have been known to occur.
Blood – An infrequent method of testing for Kratom as Kratom only reveals itself within the blood after being consumed 24 hours previously.
Saliva – It is rare that saliva is used to discover if there is Kratom within a person’s body, as it requires a mass of saliva and someone to undertake the art of high-performance liquid chromatography, which obviously is not available everywhere.
Hair – Currently, there have been no reported testing of hair to search for traces of Kratom with a person’s body. For some people, testing the hair could be more beneficial than the commonly used blood sampling, because it stores information within it for longer. There could be traces of Mitragynine found with a hair sample at least one month after it was consumed.
